Facades are chosen as a medium positioned between the private and the public, a threshold through which the cultural identities of cities in the UAE are expressed. The artistic core of the project is a pictorial research driven by curiosity, one that does not submit to existing presumptions. From emirate to emirate, city to city, and street to street, the UAE’s built environment is scanned in search of examples that exhibit character. In its early stages, the project naturally gravitated toward landmarks or “hero” buildings, many of which were already familiar to the public. Gradually, attention shifted toward lesser-known structures that reveal subtle snippets of character, buildings that may say little in isolation, yet collectively inform the identity of a street, locality, or city. Moving fluidly between architectural research and visual arts, the project cannot be fully contained within either discipline; rather, it meaningfully intersects both. This intersection generates a multidisciplinary dialogue among professionals across various fields, while remaining accessible to residents from diverse backgrounds. The vantage point and visual language make the work highly approachable, yet the breadth of its inquiry positions it as fertile ground for research. <img width="1400" height="2000" width_o="1400" Facade to Facade is limited in scope to residential, commercial, and mixed-use buildings, this body of work, developed in collaboration with Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism, expands that horizon to document a broader and more diverse architectural landscape across the emirate. To date, the collection includes over 40 structures, forming a growing visual record of Abu Dhabi’s modern heritage. Initiated in 2021 and further advanced through the Modern Heritage Conservation Initiative, the project focuses on buildings selected for their architectural, social, and historical significance. These include but are not limited to government buildings, former palaces, commercial strips, residential complexes, and infrastructural elements such as water tanks.&nbsp;Positioned at the intersection of documentation and research, the work contributes to an ongoing effort to recognise and reframe the value of Abu Dhabi’s modernist and transitional architecture, particularly from the 1970s and 1980s. These structures, often overshadowed by both traditional architecture and contemporary developments, represent a critical phase in the emirate’s urban formation—one that reflects early nation-building ambitions, regional influences, and evolving construction practices. Through a consistent visual approach, the project seeks to articulate the identity of this period, not through isolated landmarks, but through a wider architectural fabric. In doing so, it complements Facade to Facade while extending its scope beyond typological inquiry into a more comprehensive cultural and historical documentation of the built environment. Under Construction (2015–16), a photographic project documenting the rapidly shifting edges of urban expansion in the UAE. Shifting focus from architectural permanence to the ephemeral, the work spotlights construction hoardings: often colourful, branded barriers that delineate development sites. These temporary structures, whether used for advertisement or marked by the playful imprint of construction firms, are sites of unintentional expression. Devoid of fixed design codes, they are free to be yellow, pink—or both—offering a brief moment of aesthetic freedom before the built environment asserts itself. Photographed from a single vantage point and originally conceived as a typology, individual fence panels have here been deconstructed and recomposed to form a single ‘Super Fence’. In this iteration, they act as a visual archive and speculative structure—one that reflects the eclectic energy of Alserkal Avenue and gestures toward its evolving future. While inherently temporary, these structures carry traces of a city in constant transition. Through this reassembly, the work shifts from documentation to interpretation—where fragments of construction become part of a broader visual language. The project begins with a photographic study of the city’s architectural landscape, where selected structures and urban motifs are documented as they exist today. Rather than isolating iconic landmarks, the work draws from a broader visual field by identifying elements that reflect both the city’s rapid development and its layered identity. These photographs form a point of departure for a speculative extension into the future. Through a collaborative process, Mona Algwaiz translated the photographs into AI-generated compositions, reimagining their forms, materials, and spatial qualities. In this exchange, the present is not treated as a fixed moment, but as a bridge that carries traces of the past while suggesting new possibilities ahead. Positioned between documentation and interpretation, Bridge in Time reflects an ongoing interest in how architecture can be read across time. Developed within the editorial framework of National Geographic, these contributions reflect a practice that moves between image-making, storytelling, and direction, responding to the needs of each assignment. While some projects involved shaping narratives more holistically, others—such as the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi cover—focused on producing a singular, locally grounded photograph within a broader international story. Moving beyond its well-known historic monuments, the series brings together a range of sites including the Samarkand Regional Drama Theatre, Railway Station, Hydrological Design Institute, Siyob Bazaar, and Samarkand State University to construct a broader view of the city. These locations reflect different layers of Samarkand’s development, where civic, cultural, and commercial functions intersect.&nbsp;Across these spaces, ornament and structure coexist in distinct ways. Decorative elements such as tiles, carvings, and mosaics are embedded within architectural systems of repetition and symmetry, while modern and post-Soviet buildings introduce a more restrained language shaped by institutional and functional needs. Particular attention is given to public interiors and circulation spaces, where architecture is experienced through movement. Stations, halls, and staircases reveal how scale and order unfold in use, offering a more grounded reading of the built environment Together, these photographs present Samarkand as a layered city, perceptions of cities, we often rely on two dominant viewpoints: the skyline and the street. In the case of Dubai, the skyline has come to define its global image, often overshadowing the everyday environments that shape the lived experience of the city. Commissioned by Dubai Culture for Google Arts &amp; Culture, this series shifts the focus towards a more grounded reading of Dubai by centring on a recurring urban element—the parking meter. Positioned consistently within each frame, the meter acts as a visual anchor through which the city is observed across different contexts, from beaches and souks to dense urban corridors such as Sheikh Zayed Road. While newer parking systems have been introduced across parts of the city, these older meters continue to exist in specific areas, creating a layered urban condition where past and present coexist. Within this context, the project is drawn to where these meters persist, using them as a constant through which the city can be read. Although not a study of the object itself, the parking meter becomes instrumental in shaping how the city is perceived. In the absence of iconic markers, it introduces a point of familiarity that allows otherwise ambiguous scenes to be recognised as Dubai. Equally, the meter stabilises scale. In contrast to perspectives that flatten or distort the city —such as aerial views— this approach maintains a human vantage point, preserving proportion and spatial clarity. The aim of the publication is to understand and study how users shape architecture, and in turn, how these spaces have affected or shaped the urban fabric of their surroundings. The book takes its root through the UAE Architecture project, which was founded to chronicle and document the heritage of the nation, which will, in turn, contribute to enriching the transforming urban landscape. Additionally, the book traces two journeys that took place 6-months apart. The first is of the architect and author Azza Aboualam, who conducted site visits to gather on-site research. The second is Hussain AlMoosawi, as the photographer. Beyond objective documentation, the publication presented detailed and subjective observations of what both have experienced in these spaces. inevitably shapes its exterior. Central air-conditioning systems retreat to rooftops or ground-level enclosures, while window units protrude as unapologetic boxes. Split-unit systems, however, introduce a quieter and more dispersed architectural presence, embedding themselves across facades through a series of geometric interventions. From industrial structures to low-rise residential buildings, this series examines the visual language formed by split-unit systems across the UAE. Through repetition and systematic framing, the work traces how these units—often considered purely functional—contribute to the composition of facades, generating patterns that are both incidental and consistent. Beyond their utilitarian role, split units become markers of climate adaptation, revealing how architecture in the region responds to environmental demands. Their placement, frequency, and integration vary from building to building, yet collectively they establish a recognisable rhythm that cuts across typologies, scales, and neighbourhoods. This project served as a bridge between earlier explorations of overlooked urban subjects and the more defined architectural inquiry of Facade to Facade. However, in areas of greater Abu Dhabi such as Al Shahama, structures dating back to the 1980s continue to define the urban landscape, suggesting a slower and more layered pace of change. This series focuses on a recurring building type originally developed by the now-defunct Department of Social Services and Commercial Buildings. Conceived as a unified architectural expression, these structures were initially painted in blue and white, establishing a consistent visual identity along the commercial strip parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road (E10). Over time, individual interventions such as repainting, signage, maintenance, and decay introduced subtle variations, transforming what was once uniform into a collection of differentiated facades. Photographed systematically, the buildings reveal a quiet dialogue between repetition and change. While their architectural framework remains consistent, their surfaces carry traces of time, use, and individual adaptation. Some of these structures have already been demolished, while others await the same fate, positioning this work as both documentation and reflection.
